"I figured out in LIFE it’s always best to be self sufficient. I never want to be on someone else's time or agenda when the waves are giant." Since then he has made it his mission to make sure that the same scenario does not happen again.

To be able to reach all the big wave spots along Americas west coast, Sterls and his partner Troy came up with a plan which will allow them to access every spot from Alaska to Mainland Mexico. "We bought a '93 Ford conversion van with a fold down bed in the back and comfortable enough seating for six passengers. Behind the van we are towing a double axle enclosed trailer that can hold a jet ski, tons of boards, and what ever else we want". From their home in Hawaii Sterls and Troy will be able to leave at the drop of a hat to chase the biggest swells the Pacific Ocean produces. These swells more often than not end up being the biggest on the West coast of America. "I plan on surfing anywhere the conditions and swell will favor. I'm looking forward to exploring new spots that I have not yet surfed, ranging from northern Baja all the way up to the frigid waters of Alaska". While Jamie and Troy's idea is to keep the van based in central California, the first objective was to take the set up on a serious maiden voyage. Half of this voyage involved driving across a major portion of the U.S. and deep down into Mainland Mexico, ultimately arriving at Puerto Escondido. The plan for the summer is leave the "Magnum Mobile Wave Chaser" in Puerto until November, when Jamie plans to drive it back up the coast and station it in Central California.

Jamie has been visiting Puerto since he was 16 and has made it his summertime home base. "It's a lot like Hawaii” Jamie says. "It's big and barreling, and every so often it gets too big to paddle into". Back in 2006 Jamie had the opportunity to sample some truly giant Puerto. With the help of friend and fellow Red Bull athlete Coco Nogales, Jamie was towed into waves that up to that point were arguably the largest ever ridden at the infamous beach break. It's been two years now and Jamie has been anticipating the next huge swell. "I'm going to be ready. At the end of this trip my ski will be there with all my gear, and when the waves come, Ill be on it!". On this maiden voyage Sterls invited "Cabo" Charlie Stevens, a 20 year old who grew up in Cabo San Lucas and now resides in Carlsbad, and my self, a freelance videographer/photographer/surfer from the Big Island of Hawaii. Here is how the trip has unfolded so far....

Our whole first week was spent in southern California visiting Jamie's sponsors, accumulating all kinds of gear and food provisions, mapping out our route, and getting completely prepared for the long road ahead. Jamie was determined to make sure we had everything we needed before we departed. Once we hit the road, we got on the 10 east and joined the massive convoy of huge semi-trucks leaving the golden state and transporting their various good across the country. Driving among these trucks was actually very nerve wrecking since our trailer and van would be blown wayward every time one passed us. Fortunately we made it through Arizona without incident, and after 12 hours of driving through the night we finally decided to find a hotel. We pulled over in a random tiny town in New Mexico called Lordsburg to get a motel room when we noticed our van was leaking serious amounts of oil. The handy man that worked at that particular motel came over while we were looking at the engine, and offered to help us fix it. This was the weirdest little town ever and we were real skeptical of this guy "Johnny" who offered to help us. We didn't have many options since there was only one mechanic in the whole town and it was Saturday eve and EVERYTHING was closed on Sundays. After some serious deliberation we decided to trust Johnny and took the van over to his house. This was the most classic and memorable part of the trip. Johnny's house was composed of a small cluster of Adobe shacks, which his elderly father whom we befriended had lived in his entire life. While Johnny wrenched on the van we spent hours talking story with Pops about all kinds of things and had our first opportunity to practice our Spanish. In the late afternoon this huge storm came rolling down the mountains, across the plains, and right onto us. It started as a huge wall of dust like you would see in old movies, dark brown and probably a thousand feet tall, being pushed by a super strong wind, similar to hurricane force winds in Hawaii. After everything including us was covered in dust it started raining super hard and it started flooding all around the house. Johnny and his dad weren't fazed at all, but we were all tripping, agreeing that it was the strangest weather any of us had experienced. We stayed there in Lordsburg until the evening of the next day and hit the road again, driving across the majority of Texas and ultimately arriving in Corpus Christie. The city of Corpus Christie is in the southern most part of Texas, right on the water in the gulf. Upon arriving we realized the Oil leak was happening again, and Jamie decided to take the van into the Ford dealership to get it fixed correctly. Luckily we had a friend in Corpus and she put us up at her place while the van was being worked on. It ended up taking the Ford place 5 days to finish the van so we had days and days of cruising in the hottest place ever! It actually ended up being a lot of fun staying there because the pad we were staying in was a 5 bedroom, 3 story house with central A/C and was situated right on a canal with its own private boat dock. We put the Red Bull jet ski that we were hauling into the water and had it docked in front of the house the whole time. We did a bunch of fun stuff with the ski, wake boarding, towing with regular surfboards, whipping each other around on an inner-tube, and I also got to learn how to drive a jet ski for the first time. We also got to surf some real Texan waves, only 2 foot but surfable, and real fun for the standup paddleboard Jamie had also packed into the trailer. After some good ol times in Texas, and with the van in tip top shape, we were ready for the next part of our journey.

Once we hit the road and crossed the boarder in Brownsville, a constant feeling of anxiety kicked in for all of us. We had been hearing all kinds of crazy stories about traveling through Mexico so we were all on our toes the whole time. We instantly ran into some problems at the boarder with paper work stuff but once we got through that, it was just a bunch of reading maps, asking people for directions, and trying to figure out what roads to take. The roads in Mexico varied from the worst one lane roads filled with deep potholes I have ever seen, to the smoothest, wide, freshly paved roads (these were the toll roads, or Cuotas, some of which cost us as much as $40 to travel on). The toll roads were a savior because they would stretch for many miles without having to go through all the little towns, which had these tedious speed bumps they call Tope’s. Since we were towing a fairly large double axle trailer behind us which was hauling around 3000 pounds, we would have to slow down to literally 1 mph and let each set of wheels slowly go over the Topes one at a time. Each town had anywhere from one to ten or twelve tope’s, and they would appear out of nowhere, so there was a lot of hard braking going on last minute style!

We stayed in one large city along the way called Vera Cruz, which reminded me of a Mexican version of Honolulu. Vera Cruz is a major tourist destination for all the local Mexicans, and pretty much everyone there was on vacation. It was a very unique city with a real festive atmosphere along its oceanfront. The outskirts of the city were paved with cell like housing for the poor. These barrios were the largest I've ever seen, rolling on for miles and miles out away from the city. Thousands and thousands of people living in these tiny concrete structures that were all crammed together side by side and were virtually identical. Seeing that made me so, so, so, grateful to be from where I'm from, and to live where I live!

After one night in Vera Cruz we headed inland, hoping to reach the city of Salina Cruz that was located on the opposite side of Mexico, before it got too dark. A major rule of driving in Mexico is to never drive at night. There is the possibility of hitting wild animals that are in the road, and also the threat of being ambushed by Banditos. Just outside of Vera Cruz we encountered an awesome toll road that was straight and fast, and on this road we were able to make way better time than we had expected. We left Vera Cruz at about 8 am, which was on the Gulf side of Mexico, and made it to Salina Cruz, on the Pacific side, by mid afternoon. At that point we realized that we were only about 6 hours away from our final destination, Puerto Escondido, and we collectively decided to push into the night and keep driving. We arrived at Puerto at about 11:00 p.m., after 15 hours plus of driving. We went straight to a late night taco stand for dinner, and then out to a nightclub called Cabo Blanco, which rages on Monday nights, and coincidentally it was Monday night. We hung out until closing, and then Jamie had a few friends come over to our new pad and we finally got to unpack the “MMWC”(Magnum Mobile Wave Chaser).

After days and days on the road it felt so good to be able to spread out all our gear, and start to organize all the great stuff we had brought along with us. The trailer had safely transported a jet ski, beach trailer, nearly 40 surfboards, a stand up paddle board, fiberglass and resin for the local shapers, a barbecue, various food items, chairs, an umbrella, Jamie's Kettle Bells he uses for training, all my camera gear, and bunch of other random accessories.

Before we knew it, it was close to getting light so we grabbed our surfboards, put our fins in, waxed up, and were in the water as soon as we could see the waves. We ended up having a lot of fun that morning, but we didn’t last very long after not sleeping at all.

Unfortunately our first week here happened to be Puerto's first episode of heavy rains so far this season. This past week we scored a few beautiful sunny days and the forecast is looking promising for the upcoming week.

We have all felt very at home here in Puerto, with such spacious accommodations and good friends around. “The quality of life in Puerto Escondido is top notch,” says Jamie. “One of my favorite things about this place is going uptown to the local outdoor marketplace”. The market has a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, and all kinds of things you don't find in the states. Our daily diet here in Mex consists of fruit smoothies every morning, fresh salsa, beans, rice, tortillas, ect. It has been a real treat to have our own kitchen and to be able to cook our own meals at home with all the fresh ingredients the market has to offer.

It is now July 16th and we are all psyching on the new approaching swell. Early this morning Sterls and I ran way up the beach and Jamie surfed his own private reeling left sandbar barrel. It was like a quarter of the length of desert point, but all sand. Sterls got some of the longest 3-4 foot sandbar tubes he’s gotten all year.

The approaching swell arriving this weekend is an 18 second period ground swell, with a super southerly direction. These are the perfect ingredients for a Mexpipe tube fiesta. We’ve got the Red Bull Ski all laced up, our paddleboards are waxed, and our tow boards are strapped. It should be an epic last week here and we are all going to take full advantage of our final days here at the one and only Mexican Pipeline. Stay tuned for the next chapter in the real life adventure that is Jamie Sterling's life.
Pipeline stitches

Its not if you will get hurt at pipeline, its only a matter of time. I wiped out on a thick 10ft wave that pitched me over the falls and onto the hungry razor sharp reef. I came up with cuts on my arm, elbow, butt, and the worse cut on my left foot. My foot needed 5 stitches and placed me out of the water for a week. Below is the wave that sidelined me.
Photo. Its been fun with some serious moments at The Pipeline. A few of my friends got hurt. Mark Healey broke his left knee cap and fractured his right heel. The day after Jason Shibata and Fred Patachia fell victim to pipes hungry no mercy reef. All three incidents resulted the boys help up the beach and on the sidelines to heal up.Ive had a few fun waves in the process. I've been riding a 7'8 quad. We had a 18ft swell on thurs. I towed Phantoms with Troy Alotis my HI tow partner and mentor. Thru out the day Sean Davey and Eric Ippel hovered above us in a white chopper capturing Jamie O'Brien and I bagging a few fun ones. There's more swell on the way on Tues but the boogie boarders have their event running this coming week. Second options may find me paddling Phantoms or Rock piles. The winter has definently turned for the better. Lets hope the swells keep the momentum.

Kettle bells

I've been training with Alex King. It's located way down south close to Gautemala. It was once a small sleepy fishing town. That is until it was discovered by some surfers and they dubbed it the (MEXICAN PIPELINE). The place is a great getaway. The surf offers you stand up tubes daily. The food and exchange rate is everything a surfer on a surfer budget is looking for.

West Australia slabs

I live for chasing swells on a days notice. The anxiety and adrenaline started from the minute I received an email from Harro stating there are some good storms approaching West Aus. I was sitting in Teahupoo. I just surfed 10-12 ft Teahupoo the same day. Immediately I emailed the boys at red bull for some travel help and they approved it. Now was the time to pull the trigger. I emailed Harro once more to confirm the mission was a GO! It all happened fast and smoothly. I was on my way to Sydney then to Perth the next morning. Harro met me a the airport in Sydney and we proceeded to Red bull to gather the rescue sleds. The next morning we were on the flight to Perth. We met Paul Morgan at the airport who I just met in Tahiti and surfed the same big swell with him at Teahupoo. Upon our arrival in Perth we proceeded to the car rental agency to pick up our two 4wheel drive vehicles. All the logistics were going great. Next stop to pick up my red bull Jet Ski at red bull in Perth. Alfy Carter was also waiting there with all his equipment ready to charge. We had all the heavy machinery and enough red bulls to keep you awake forever. A few stops in Perth to buy food and we were off.
After driving for 4 hours we were smashed. We pulled off the road in the middle of West Aus and all slept in the dirt for 3 hours. As we lied down it started to sprinkle rain. We were all so tired we just pulled our sleeping bags over our heads and took cover. We got back on the road in time to make it to the destination where we planned to surf. As we arrived we find out that the wave we set out to find was too far out to drive Jet skis. We opted to head to the ugly slab Cyclops. Morgs and Alfy had a go. I didn’t want anything to do with it. It's not a wave you surf, you survive! Both Alfy and Morgs survived and we called it a day. I was disappointed! Cyclops was the last wave I wanted to surf, and we went there on my first day of the trip. Luckily there was another swell two days out that would offer waves worthy of me travelling to Aus to surf. The second swell proved to be bigger and better. We left the area of Cyclops and headed to our next destination where there was a few spots to choose from. One of the waves I surfed a few years ago. A great left hander that served up some fancy tube time. The other wave we found on a day when the swell was dropping and we were driving down every 4wd track in the vicinity looking for possible places to tow-in. From the beach you could see it capping and the right would run down the reef. It was so far out we couldn’t really see if it was a wave or a piece of Indian Ocean mush. The next morning we were out the door before the sun came up. It was our last chance to get some surf. The day turned out to be a special day. We scored the left at first light. We all bagged some good tubes then proceeded on a 30 minute bouncy jet ski ride down the coast in search of the right hand bombie we scoped out the day before. When we pulled up to the slab smiles were beaming. It was 8-10ft with subterranean holes in the ocean folding over. I was stoked to be able to get a mix bag of waves on this West Aus wave chase. We named the right hand bombie Poodles. We each had a handful of great rides at the powerful outer reef before our petrol was running low. It was a great way to sightsee. Very relaxing cruising with the 5 knot
current. I saw a few beavers and swans. In the shallows of the river
laid an old shipwreck that must have been 100 years old. We are
expecting some waves on fri.

Ireland

I'm currently in the land of the Irish. I arrived in Dublin Mar 25. I
plan on staying here for three weeks looking for the best waves the
luck of the Irish bless me with. I'm joined by Tamayo Perry pipeline
standout, Emelia Perry water woman, Robby Seeger big wave windsurfer
now turned pov cinematographer, Saun Dickson New Zealand hard charger,
and Sligo Irish locals Mickey Hamilton and Paul O'kane. We are in the
north of Ireland. I'm acclimatizing to the brisk temperatures and
putting my new Matuse wetsuit 5/4/3 full suit to the full test.
We are all staying in a three-bedroom house plus a caravan. Three jet
skies, Quad, and loads of film equipment enough to make a real motion
picture. We are creating a TV show for rebel media. Rebel media a
German action sports TV channel similar to Fuel TV. They generate 70 million viewers from around Europe (Visit their website:Rebel Media).
The Guinness is the real deal here, It's the local drink. Very creamy! Stay tuned for the surf stories as they unfold.

We will be towing and paddling. There will also be a big wave event happening while we are there. Photos and video will be on the agenda
as well. Alex Berger and Christian Peralta will be videoing. Alfredo Escobar and Scott Aichner will be taking stills. Swell looks very big for all of next week.

Aloha, Jamie

Cape Town continues...

Yes it was very big on Tues June 14.. Too bad no extension. Too bad nobody even documented our soul session at Dungeons that day. My best surfs are never documeted anyways. Go figure... Hope you are all well. Either with family and friends. Or out the back getting shacked at your fav home spot... I'm still here. I'm staying in Kommetjie with Adrew Marr on the beach in front of Cape Town's other gem Sunset...

Mickey and I just had a fun road trip up the west coast, uncrowded 4ft lefts and right reefs. I'm going to durbs for a week to check the parties and warm water, then back to L.a. on the 5th of July.... I'll then regroup, check the maps and harness the energy somewhere else in the world. Hope to see you all next time when our paths cross. Any plans you have for chasing big waves or hollow waves tip me off, lets GO!

Cheers brus...

Aloha Jamie

Still in Cape Town

I'm still in Cape town. I'm fascinated with this diverse peninsula. I reckon Kommetjie or Hout bay are probably my favorite places to live in the huge country of South Africa. There are at least three huge big wave spots and every other type of wave a surfer might fantasize about. It's hard for me to leave this area.

Last week the big waves showed up two days after the Redbull waiting period. Why they did not extend remains a mistake. Funny how nature works like that! We towed into Dungeons June 14 '05. The crew Cape town locals, Chris Bertish, Simon Lowe, Ross Lindsey, Rienhart, Stuart, Nico Duncann, Gar Linden, Jenny, Twiggy... I was blessed with the privilege to use the Redbull ski here in Cape town.... I used my new 4 fin Strech tow-board and worked brilliantly. The size 18-25 ft. Yes 50ft. faces... It was alot bigger then I envisioned the contest being held in. We wolud of had a big challenge to find, paddle and ride these waves on our 9ft boards but it would of been gladitorial conditions. Maybe next year we will paddle in and have the event. I'm stoked either way.

I'm now waiting for tomorrows episode of swell and might make a dash back up the coast to J-bay and eventually Durban. I'm living at Andrew Marrs house right on the beach in front of Cape Towns best biggest wave, Sunset. It's a relaxing tIme in my life at the moment. Just enjoying the countries finest fruits and flavors... In the past 20 days I've gone Shark cage diving w/ Flea, Grant Washburn, Jenny, Beau Emmerton, and Doug Cockwell who took some amazing underwater fish eye stuff of us scoping the sharks thru steel cages.... I saw some beasts! 14ft great whites in your face looking into your eyes having a good old sniff at me....In total I saw 5 different sharks thru out the day. Beautiful animal, soaring thru the great white green ocean as if they were jet planes..

We road tripped up the coast to J-bay. Fun surfs there. Speed lines 101. You go so fast there. We had 4 ft waves and a friendly vibe with the crowd.

Back in Cape Town one evening we made it up to Table mountain to enjoy the finest South African red wine and look over the whole city of Cape Town. Stunning vantage point high in the mountain.

We did a west coast road trip and surfed e-bay and dumps. Dumps is a heavy reef break. We surfed there alone... This country is littered with surf. You must just drive a little. The roads are very safe and smooth which makes it nice.

I have 3 weeks left. I'll tow one more swell in Cape Town then chase the energy right up to J-bay and carry on till I reach Durban. Look forward to seeing you all soon.

Keep well...

Winter time, Jamie

Dungeons

Yes, the surf is still rolling in at very high consistency. I'm surfing killer waves still. No contest yet. We did however surf Dungeons, June 1st. It was 8-12ft and very stiff offshore with winds roaring 40 mph.

The next day we road tripped up the east coast two hours outside of Cape town. Surfed Hermanus a mutant big wave. The inside section (sunset beach look-alike end bowl) was doing its thing. The crew... just us and a family of 9 seals that escorted us back out to the lineup after every action packed wave we kicked out of. Carlos Burle, Coco, Gary Linden, Flea, Thomas Kleynhans, Jenny, and myself. I rode my new 6'8 G. Pang.

Yesterday June 3 Beau Emerton, Jenny, Thomas (he's from Cape town alternate in the event), Linden, and (danger woman) KI'm Hamrock all surfed Platboom a fun reform left reef break. 3 ft. similar to the Ronnie bowl rockies. Went out to party at Cape towns finest clubs last night Doug Cockwell escorted us around town. Hit up a total of 5. Good tImes with all the crew here. 6 of us are going Shark cage diving tomorrow up in Gans
Bay.

Might go to a reggae concert tonight with all the boys in Cape Town. Looks good for Tues. or Weds of next week to possibly hold the Dungeons paddle in event. Big boards are working great. I have a magic 9'4 Brewer and a new 9'4 Bushman. I rode it the other day out at Dungeons. It's tight, fast, and pink thruster. Water temp has been warm. 3X2 wet-suit. I'm just chilling out at home today. Surfed out. Time to check all the photos and video clips we have been bagging.

Aloha k-den,
Jamie

Surfed out!

I'm so surfed out at the moment. I'm on one of the best rolls for continuous perfect waves. I've been traveling and surfing hollow gourmet lefts since March 5. It's been pretty dreamy traveling on this endless barrel extravaganza. Meeting more and more friendly surfers and characters from different walks of life. The more I travel the more the world gets smaller. Pretty trippy!

On Sunday April 17 Teahupoo was 6-8 ft. Ten surfers of less out everyone getting perfect shacks. The crew was Stephan Koehne; Kalani Chapman; Jason Frederico; Danilo Costa; Pato; Artjuna Morgan; Liam McNamarra and a couple boogie boarders. I rode my 5'10 retro rocket and 6'6. Not too many people here yet due to the fact that the lowers event is happening at the same time as the Tahitian Trials. Perfect timing for more tube time.

Living the dream.
JS

Tahiti

Im in Tahiti surfing Teahupoo.

I scored in Easter island.
